The new-school DJ

I was going to see a show with a friend of mine on Friday at Orchard Cineleisure so while waiting, I decided to check out the shops in the store. I then happened to go past this shop called iShop and checked it out as I heard that there was a kind of DJ academy there. Saw some young ladies standing behind a DJ console trying to look cool and trying to tell everyone that they were superstar DJs. Behind them was this guy trying to mix and trying to look cool too. Had a good laugh to myself and walked out of the store

The reason I checked out the store is because a friend of mine told me that this DJ academy was giving out DJ certificates after taking a course with them. I then started to ask myself. Has it reached that stage…where certificates are given to DJs? Back in the day you just practised your craft till you perfected the art of mixing. After that was just practice, practice and even more practice. Then if you were lucky, you got employment in a mobile disco or even a club residency.

Been there, done that.

But it looks like this is a paper society after all. It now seems that further advancement in the DJ field means sitting or even going for a course and getting a certificate…something like a diploma or degree. But to be fair, back in the day there were only turntables. Nowadays we have CD players and MP3s and a whole lot more. In short, there are many and various avenues for the DJ to be as articulate as possible. Better variety but at what cost?

I miss the old days, and the camaraderie among DJs. I do not see that nowadays.
